Looking for Card Making Ideas

Card making ideas are everywhere. Around the house, outside the window, in the garden, at the shopping malls, children books, wrapping paper, paper napkins, fabrics, and magazines.

These are some of the places you can get ideas and layouts for your handmade greeting cards. Just be on the look-out and you will find them.

Collecting Card Making Ideas

Sketch Log or Book

Following is a method I use to file my sketches. I call this my Card Making Sketch Log. I use 7″x5″ standard size white unruled cards that I purchased from the stationery store to sketch my ideas. First, I use my quilt grip template which you can buy from any store that sells quilting supplies. Or you can also just draw squares on your sketch cards. So whenever I have ideas for card design or when waiting for transport or in between appointments, I will just bring out one of my sketch cards and sketch with my color pencils.

When I return home, I file them into a A5 size ring file and used for future reference. With the quilt grips drawn in, I find it very easy to use each individual square for a card design or combine two or more squares for bigger size project. You will want to number each sketch in its square grip and file them in the A5 ring files (e.g. File #1-100, #101-200, etc.)

Card Sent Log

Keep a log file (more A5 ring files) of people you sent cards to. In this Cards Sent Log File, file the names of recipients in alphabetical order (a set of 5″x7″ ruled cards is good). Whenever you sent out one of your homemade cards, note down the sketch number in the recipient’s log card and date sent. This way, you won’t be sending the same design cards to them next time.
